The dragonflies of Romania

The dragonfly fauna of Romania is amongst the least known of Europe. Large areas are virtually unexplored and the distribution of many dragonfly species is unclear. This is not due to the lack of good habitats or interesting dragonflies. No, Romania has simply been neglected.

Romania’s dragonfly fauna is one of the richest in Europe with more than 70 species present. The country’s habitats are so varied from the high Carpathians, to deep gorges, limestone massifs to dry steps and the mighty Danube ending in the Black Sea but not before forming the Danube Delta.

We are sure you will enjoy exploring all this habitats with us in search of dragonflies, birds and butterflies.

Below you can find a few pictures of the dragonfly species encountered in Romania and also a list with possible species. You can download the list of Romanian dragonflies in PDF format so you can print it and use it for keeping record of observed dragonflies.
