The Reptiles and Amphibians of Romania
The reptile and amphibian fauna of Romania is amongst the least known of Europe. Large areas are virtually unexplored and the distribution of many species is unclear. This is not due to the lack of good habitats or interesting species but is more due to lack of reserchers and passionate herpetologists.
Romania’s reptile and amphibian fauna is one of the richest in Europe with 23 species of amphibians and 36 species of reptilians present. The country’s habitats are so varied from the high Carpathians, to deep gorges, limestone massifs to dry steps and the mighty Danube ending in the Black Sea but not before forming the Danube Delta.
